This two-disc import set includes the band's three early albums for the Josie label in sequence, plus a selection of outtakes from the same fertile period. Among the surprises is a heavy cover of
the Beatles' "Come Together." The relentlessly syncopated backbeats and stuttering guitar lines have a way of sneaking up on the unaware listener, too -- all the way to the dancefloor. This is seminal New Orleans funk in an affordable package that serves as a better introduction than Rhino's previous retrospectives (which include material from the band's Warner Brothers disco years).
