During the 1990s, Los Angeles-based drummer
Jeff Hamilton led a trio that was similar in style to that headed by his former boss, bassist
Ray Brown. His group, which in 1994 featured pianist
Larry Fuller and bassist
Jesse Murphy, works out colorful transitions between sections, arranged touches that give their versions of standards their own personality.
Fuller sounds a bit like
Oscar Peterson and
Benny Green in spots,
Murphy is solid in both support and in his short solos, and
Hamilton is as subtle and swinging as always. This CD is a good example of
the Jeff Hamilton Trio's music.
